What is a Mentor?

A Mentor is the designated point of contact for a subworker during each open shift they pick up. The Mentor is typically the individual overseeing the work being performed for that shift (supervisor-on-duty).

Subworkers are expected to check in with the Mentor upon arrival and to notify the Mentor before completing closing duties, clocking out and leaving the shift. If a subworker has questions or needs clarification during the shift, the Mentor serves as the primary contact.

ShiftSub recommends that the Mentor be responsible for the subworker’s success on each shift and provide the information necessary to perform the agreed-upon role and foster a positive, collaborative working environment between subworkers and the employer’s existing team. This may include basic task guidance and general orientation related to the shift. Each time the subworker picks up a shift for the same employer, they will get more and more familiar with what is expected of them.

The Mentor, with permissions granted on ShiftSub, make notes in the open shift posting as to subworker’s appearance, attitude, work ethic, teamwork, closing duty participation, attendance, punctuality, and/or any behaviors that may be important to note for HR and/or future shifts.

As subworkers join ShiftSub, they become familiar with the Mentor role and understand its purpose as part of the platform’s standard workflow. Using this approach consistently—and including the Mentor’s name and contact information in each shift posting—helps provide clarity, improve communication, and reduce misunderstandings during shifts.
